Research of the Department based on the practical needs of the North-Eastern region of Ukraine and is part of the National Program of Human Health. The department studied the impact of adverse external factors on the health of children and adolescents. Study the etiopathogenesis of early anemia in newborns from pregnant mothers with anemia. Discovered the mechanism of anemia in newborn & determining role in these process of some regulators of erythropoiesis (erythropoietin, cytokines, fibronectin, tumor necrosis factor). Scientific research in recent years was concerning the study of microelement prevalence in pregnant women, newborns and children of different age groups. Principles of correcting of imbalance of trace elements through the use of modern microelement preparations were evidence-based. A study of membrane pathology and energy supply in various pathological conditions in children was conducted. The department cooperates with the O.O. Bogomolets National Medical University, National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education, Kharkiv National Medical University, etc.

Members of department are certified (GCP), which allow for international clinical studies.

In 2008-2009, the department carried out state-issue "Effectiveness of different methods ferrotherapy, inductors of erythropoietin synthesis and recombinant erythropoietin if iron deficiency anemia occurs in pregnant women and children of different age groups". In 2010-2011 performed 2 themes: "Ways of optimization of microelement and energy supply in diseases at pregnant women and children" and "Correction of microelement disorders in infants and children of different age groups". Since 2012 the department carried out theme "Diagnostics, prognosis and correction of microelement disorders in system mother-placenta-fetus-newborn if perinatal pathology occurs".

The department is actively involved in grant applications. Since 2012 members of the department take part in working group on the TEMPUS project "Implementation of Innovative Teaching Strategies in Medical Education and development of an International Network focused on National Learning Centres" (530519-TEMPUS-1-2012-1-UK-TEMPUS-JPCR).

Over the years the scientists of the Department published in journals and collections of works more than 500 scientific papers. Were defended 10 dissertations on candidate’s degree and 1 on doctor's degree.
